Remain In Mexico

Today’s immigration policy forces many people fleeing violence and instability in South and Central America—or crossing from Mexico in search of work and a better life—to remain in Mexico while awaiting asylum. There, they face uncertainty, often without shelter, safety, or food. Others are detained in overcrowded, unsanitary holding cells within a system that criminalizes them, labeling them as threats rather than human beings in need, as they wait—sometimes endlessly—for their case to be heard.
Children accompany their parents on these treacherous journeys al Norte (“to the North”), holding tightly to their hands with innocence and hope. Tragically, some never arrive, while others are separated from their families, confined in filthy detention centers, stripped of shoes or shoelaces, and given only a concrete floor, thin pad, and thermal blanket for warmth. Is this truly the best we can offer?
