DRAWINGS ON PAPER
I had a painting instructor once say, "a good painting starts with a good drawing". Many of these drawings come from classes and workshops I attended over the years where the consensus- learn to draw accurately and represent in drawing what you see in real life was highly valued and which I enjoyed trying to make happen on paper. Now, after all the schooling and all the teaching I still value drawings constructed and built up on paper in charcoal or pencil, but I do not agree all the time about a "good" painting starting with a good drawing. Actually I do not really think there are any set rules or places to start, for what could make for a "good" painting. Just work from your heart and enjoy the ride.
